How to hang a piece of art correctly
The Ultimate Beginner's Guide
How to hang a piece of art correctly?
A work of art deserves a place where it can unfold its full effect. But hanging a picture can be a challenge, especially for beginners. With these instructions, you will be able to hang a work of art safely and professionally, step by step—without stress and with the best results.

Preparation: Finding the right spot
A work of art should be integrated harmoniously into the room in order to achieve its optimal effect. Here are the most important points to consider:
Lighting:
-
Choose a spot with sufficient, but not direct, sunlight. UV light can fade the colors of your artwork over time.
-
Opt for even lighting. Gallery spotlights or side lighting can emphasize structure and contrast.
Effect:
-
Should the picture evoke emotions or stimulate conversation? Adjust the placement to achieve the desired effect.
Surroundings:
-
For a cozy atmosphere, place the picture above the sofa or in the dining area.
-
In business premises, the picture should be representative and clearly visible, for example behind your workplace or on a central wall.

In 5 steps to
the perfectly
hung picture
The right technique: 5 steps to hanging a picture perfectly
Tools:
-
Folding rule or tape measure
- Spirit level
- Masking tape
- Pencil
- Hammer and hardened nails (e.g., steel nails 4-5 cm long and 2 mm in diameter)
Step 1: Measure the distance between the hangers
Measure the distance between the hangers on the back of the artwork. Make a note of these measurements.
Step 2: Mark the position of the holes
-
Attach masking tape to the wall and mark the distance between the hangers on it.
-
Determine the desired height: the center of the picture should be at about eye level (approx. 1.60 m).
-
Use a pencil to mark the positions for the nails.
Step 3: Use a spirit level
Hold the spirit level against the mark made by the first nail and mark the second hole horizontally to it. This will ensure that the picture hangs straight.
Step 4: Hammer in the nails
-
Use hardened nails that will hold securely in the wall.
-
Leave about 1 cm of the nails protruding from the wall so that the picture can be hung easily.
Step 5: Hang and align the picture
Hang the artwork carefully. If it is not completely straight, you can adjust the corresponding nail slightly.
Special cases: Walls and heavier pictures
Reinforced concrete walls:
-
A hammer drill with suitable dowels and screws is required here.
-
Consult a specialist if necessary.
Drywall and cavity walls:
-
Use special plasterboard or cavity wall plugs.
-
Solid nails are often sufficient for lighter pictures.
Heavy works of art (> 5 kg):
-
Use a drill to attach suitable dowels and screws.
-
Carefully check the load-bearing capacity of the wall.
Safety tips
-
Check for pipes and wires: Avoid drilling into electrical wires or water pipes. A pipe and wire detector from a hardware store can help.
-
Filling: Small holes can be easily filled with filler.
-
Frames and passe-partouts: On colored or textured walls, a frame ensures that the picture stands out well.
